Research Question:

What psychologically motivates athletes to participate in extreme sports and how does understanding that motivation allow them to better know their minds and develop character to live a life well-lived?

Thesis Statement:

Many perceptions view risk-taking as a common motive. This results in certain sports being presented as dangerous and reckless. While risk is a common concept associated with extreme sports, athletes go beyond the need to seek thrill; extreme sports athletes are motivated by the opportunity to develop their character and connect to the natural world.

Action Project Description:

My mission for this project was to inspire and motivate those in my community. I wanted to show that extreme sports are healthy, all risk taking aside and contradict that common misconception of adrenaline junkie. I am creating a short docu-series about the psychology of extreme sports, based on the perspectives of local athletes. I hope to inspire others to try new things and educate those on the reality of these dangerous but beautiful activities.
